Jamie Whincup was awarded the Barry Sheene Medal at the V8 Supercars Gala Awards last night (Monday), the icing on the cake to a stellar year.
He and his racing outfit, TeamVodafone, took the lion’s share of awards including the ones for pole position, Champion team of the year and best presented team.
But the Gala Awards were also a chance for other teams and drivers in both the V8 Supercars and Fujitsu Series to be recognised for their achievements (see award list below).
The awards were held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre a day after the NRMA Motoring and Services Grand Finale at Oran Park.
It provided a great chance for everyone in the V8 Supercar family, who are usually confined to crew uniforms or casual wear at the track, to glam up in suit and ties for the men and cocktail or floor length frocks for the WAGs (wives and girlfriends).
The night featured a performance by a Bee Gees tribute band and many speeches, including one from V8 Supercar Chairman Tony Cochrane.
He said Whincup will be a great ambassador for years to come and congratulated Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife for his long and successful career.
Cochrane also paid tribute to retiring driver Paul Morris and talked about his excitement of the Homebush street event next year, but could not help having a dig at a newspaper which criticised the New South Wales Government’s decision to run the event.
It is the second year in a row that Whincup has received the Barry Sheene Medal, the V8 Supercar version of a best and fairest medal.
He paid tribute to all of the staff at TeamVodafone and made a special mention of Team Principal Roland Dane; his mother and father, sponsors Vodafone, Nokia, Toshiba, Dexion and Komastsu.
He also thanked his teammate Craig Lowndes, who partnered him for their third consecutive Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 win.
“All through 2006, 2007 when I was off the pace and driving pretty slow, you helped me out, taught me how to drive a V8 Supercar fast and you’ve been an awesome teammate, great mate and hopefully you can feel the number one on this now, for sure,” Whincup said.
Also during the night, many well wishes were made in speeches to Formula Ford driver Lucas Dumbrell, who was injured in a crash at Oran Park on the weekend.
Jack Daniel’s Racing Team Owner Larry Perkins was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame last night and during his speech he choked up as he sent his wishes to Dumbrell, who is the brother of Autobarn Racing’s Paul, and the Dumbrell family.
